Clarence Adoo Brass Band at Boscombe
Recorded live at Boscombe Salvation Army June 2006
Listen to some of the 'greats' of Salvation Army music performed by a composite, but exceptionally competent band; the personnel list is very impressive. International orchestral and brass band conductor, Bramwell Tovey is a supporter of Clarence and he takes up the baton for this recording. Aficionados of Salvation Army music will need no introduction to some of the featured composers: William Himes, James Curnow, Trevor Davis, Norman Bearcroft, Leslie Condon. This is Salvation Army brass music at its best.
As a retired Salvation Army bandmaster, Clarence will be familiar not only with the players, but also the music presented on this CD. He can't play an instrument now, but he does appear on this CD, voicing a prayer during the music of the second track. Other delights on this CD are guest appearance from the junior musicians at Boscombe—the Young People's Band and Singing Company—who show that there are firm foundations for the continuation of Salvation Army music in that part of Dorset.
The Clarence Adoo Brass Band itself comes together every three years or so to perform a concert to raise money for The Clarence Adoo Trust. Now you have the chance to hear this great band again and again. For this, their fourth concert, they decided to create a CD to extend the music of the band to a wider audience, but more importantly to create a new revenue stream for the trust. The producer is Alvin Allison, a prominent Salvation Army musician based in the south of England, so you know this is a quality production.

Clarence's World of Brass CD
This veritable cornucopia of popular, upbeat brass music makes almost an hour's excellent listening pleasure for anyone interested in brass music, whatever the genre.
The mix represents Clarence experience in playing orchestral trumpet and his roots in Salvation Army brass bands on the cornet. Clarence invites you to take in classical pieces such as Khachaturian's energetic Sabre Dance or the haunting Andante from Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony. Or from Salvation Army repertoire there's Erik Leidzen's joyful O Happy Day to Joy Web's thoughtful Share My Yoke.
The mix of performers includes brass ensembles, orchestral brass sections and the famous Black Dyke Band. Soloists include Dudley Bright, Paul Archibald and James Watson.
As the first CD to have been created especially for Clarence, it has great sentimental value. It was put together by the late orchestral tuba player Paul Smith, who was able to persuade musicians to per from free and obtain support from other organisations to minimise the cost so that Clarence would benefit greatly from this effort.

The Sound of Hope DVD
The Sound of Hope is a star-studded DVD produced by Clarence himself. It is a ‘feelgood’ DVD that really shows just how Clarence gets on with life despite his horrific accident. But it is not primarily about Clarence; it is about music and features some very well-known musicians.
As the publicity for the DVD says:
‘Is music merely a comforting soundtrack to our lives or is it capable of becoming much more than that – a force for good, an agent of change, a source of hope?‘
Clarence Adoo takes you on an enlightening and stimulating journey, revealing his personal, moving experiences of the power of music which carried him from a near-death experience to becoming a motivated, inspirational man – with the help of his amazing world-renowned musician friends.’
In this DVD Clarence asks musician friends what music means to them. Included among them are Sir Cliff Richard, Jools Holland, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Wynton Marsalis, John Rutter and Courtney Pine, in whose jazz band Clarence played for five years.
Interspersed with the interviews are performances by the interviewees and Sting, Black Dyke Band, Amandla Esandla, blind pianist Derek Paravicini, Headspace Ensemble (in which Clarence plays an electronic instrument invented for him: Headspace), Cambridge Singers, Philip Cobb and Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. Of note are two pieces, both performed with the International Staff Band of The Salvation Army (ISB). The first is the March ‘Shoeburyness’ dedicated to the Salvation Army corps where Clarence grew up and served. It was written by Eiliv Herikstad at Clarence’s request. Clarence conducts this piece. The other piece is thanks to technical wizardry. A sound recording of Clarence playing a cornet solo ‘On the Golden Shore’ in The Royal Albert Hall in the 1980s is matched to the accompaniment of the present-day ISB.
If you like music, this DVD for you. And as a bonus, there is a free CD with the music from the DVD so you can listen to it in the car.
All for just £12+pp.
